WILMSLOW PREPARATORY SCHOOL
An outdoor football pitch installed in 2018 for school and community use. The case study follows the original ground preparation and records the pitch again in 2025.
Create a dedicated space for football practice, PE and break-time games. As Good As Grass installs artificial sports turf for schools, multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and private recreational spaces, including smaller football areas and replacement surfaces.
Start with the activities you want to provide and the ground you already have. We can then discuss the turf, line markings, preparation and ongoing care your project needs.
Explore two completed projects with different layouts, then see a tarmac-to-turf school installation further down the page.
For a school football area, the brief starts with who will use it, how often and what happens around the pitch. PE lessons, lunchtime games and after-school sessions can place different demands on the same space.
We agree the playing area, markings, access and preparation before installation. Our Wilmslow project is one example of a purpose-built outdoor school pitch.
A MUGA is a multi-use games area. Listing several sports does not mean one turf gives the same playing characteristics for all of them. Tell us which activities matter most, so the surface and markings can be considered together.
Our Morecambe MUGA installation includes a shared court layout. For a wider site plan, Sport England’s outdoor surface guidance explains how different sports and levels of use affect surface selection.
Some projects need new ground preparation; others start with an existing hard surface. Its condition, levels, drainage and edges need checking before we agree whether it can be retained.
At Fulwood Primary School, the installation used the existing structurally sound tarmac. An old artificial pitch needs its own assessment: replacing the carpet will not correct a failing base underneath.
Artificial turf removes mowing from the surfaced area, but it still needs a care routine. Plan for debris removal, appropriate brushing and cleaning, clear drainage routes, and checks to joins, edges and line markings.
The product and level of use determine the maintenance schedule. Ask about cleaning, repairs and maintenance and the care instructions and guarantee terms that apply to your installation.
A pitch may be one part of a bigger school or leisure project. Explore the relevant service for each area.
Dedicated turf areas for PE, practice and everyday games.
Shared spaces with surface choice and markings based on the main activities.
Smaller private spaces planned around the available room and existing garden.
Connect sport with the school’s wider playground and outdoor learning areas.
A separate walking and running route alongside the pitch or playground.
Turf for putting greens and mini-golf layouts, with a separate brief for ball roll and contours.
A surface-only installation over a suitable existing base is a different job from building a new pitch. Your quote should make the scope clear, including which preparation and additional works are included.
| Part of the project | What changes the cost | Useful details to send |
|---|---|---|
| Area and layout | Dimensions, shape, access and the proposed line markings. | Approximate length and width, plus a sketch or site plan. |
| Existing ground | New excavation, base repairs or use of a suitable hard surface. | Photos of the current surface, edges and any drainage issues. |
| Turf and underlay | The selected carpet, any specified underlay and its fitting requirements. | Main activities, age groups and expected hours of use. |
| Preparation and extras | Drainage, edging, removal of old materials and any works by other contractors. | Who is handling each part of the project; flag any fencing or lighting plans. |
| Programme and aftercare | Site access, working arrangements and the agreed care plan. | Term dates or target timing, access restrictions and maintenance needs. |
Send your postcode, approximate area and a few site photos to start the conversation. We’ll discuss what needs checking before preparing a project quote.
SCHOOL FOOTBALL & MUGA PROJECT PHOTOS
This completed project used the school’s existing structurally sound tarmac as the starting point. The turf was fitted with a football layout and custom lines in the school’s colours.
See the Fulwood Primary School case study for the site brief, installation and maintenance details.
Agree the brief, confirm the preparation and plan a practical installation programme.
Tell us your location, approximate area, existing surface and main sports. Photos and a simple plan help us understand the starting point.
We discuss the turf, markings, base condition and any underlay requirements, then clarify the installation work and quote.
Agree access, timing and responsibilities before work starts. At handover, confirm the care instructions for the installed surface.

Areas We Cover
If you are comparing a 3G pitch with a product described as “4G”, ask for the actual carpet specification, any infill and underlay, the intended activities and the maintenance requirements. A label on its own does not establish what the completed pitch is suitable for.
MUGA describes how an area is used, rather than one specific turf system. Start with the priority sports and the level of play, then consider the whole surface construction.
For FA-affiliated football in England, check the required testing and the pitch’s current status on the FA 3G Pitch Register. Confirm competition requirements with the relevant football authority before commissioning a pitch; installing artificial grass does not automatically make it approved for match play.
Our projects shown here focus on school and recreational spaces. Share your intended use when you enquire so we can establish whether the proposed work fits your brief.
Practical answers for school football areas, MUGAs and recreational turf projects.
Our published work includes school football pitches, MUGAs and recreational turf areas. We also install Daily Mile tracks and mini-golf and putting turf. Tell us the main activities and level of play so we can discuss the right scope.
It can be an option where the existing surface is suitable. Its structural condition, drainage, levels and edges need checking first. Our Fulwood Primary School project used an existing sound tarmac base; that does not mean every tarmac area can be covered without preparation.
A MUGA can accommodate several activities, but surface choice involves priorities. Ball bounce, ball roll and underfoot feel vary between systems. Agree the main sports and standard of play before selecting the turf and line layout.
Cost depends on the area, existing base, selected turf, markings, access and preparation. A surface-only job over suitable tarmac has a different scope from a new build. Send dimensions, photos and a postcode for a discussion and project quote.
Yes. Send the available dimensions, photos of the garden, access details and how you intend to use it. A small practice area should be quoted for its own size and preparation needs, rather than priced as a full school or club pitch.
The need for underlay depends on the intended use and the specified surface system. It should be considered with the carpet, base and any performance requirements. See our shock pads and underlay page and discuss your project before choosing materials.
Follow the installed product’s care instructions. Typical tasks include removing leaves and debris, appropriate brushing and cleaning, and checking joins, edges and drainage. Any infill maintenance depends on the selected system. Ask about maintenance and repairs when planning the installation.
There is no single lifespan for every pitch. Product choice, intensity of use, installation and care all matter. Our Wilmslow case study documents a 2018 installation again in 2025. Ask for the product-specific guarantee and its conditions with your quote.
We can discuss replacement turf and repairs after assessing the existing area. The carpet, base, drainage and any underlay need checking; problems below the surface may need work before a new carpet is fitted.
Yes, subject to the agreed design and turf specification. The Fulwood school project includes custom line colours. Send your proposed activities and layout so line colours and overlaps can be considered before installation.
No. Check the requirements for the competition and the actual installed pitch. In England, the FA 3G Pitch Register shows approved and expired statuses and the relevant test type. Discuss formal match requirements with the appropriate football authority before ordering.
The programme depends on the size, preparation, access and any works by other contractors. Tell us about term dates or a target opening date at the start. We can then discuss a realistic sequence and timing for the agreed scope.
Yes, the route can be considered as part of the site layout. Our Moss Side Primary School project includes a blue route alongside the sports space. Visit Daily Mile tracks for schools for route planning and project examples.
For a temporary event or display, use our artificial grass hire service. Share the venue, dates, area and activity brief so the temporary surface and fitting arrangements can be discussed separately from a permanent pitch installation.
Tell us your postcode, approximate dimensions, current surface and main activities. Add your target timing and any access restrictions so we can understand the project before discussing the next step.
