Fulwood Primary School
380-metre field-perimeter route
A bespoke route following the shape of the school field, with school branding colours and the central grassed area retained for other activities.
A dedicated artificial grass track gives pupils a defined route for running, walking or wheeling, while keeping other parts of the school grounds available for play. We plan the route, prepare the base and install the grass and agreed markings.
Whether you are upgrading a worn field perimeter or planning a compact playground circuit, start with the pupils, the space and the surface beneath it. We can also discuss supply-only options where you already have a contractor.
Two completed projects showing how a running route can work alongside the rest of the school grounds.
Choose a route that staff can supervise and pupils can join without crossing busy play areas or entrances. We assess the available space, corners, gradients, access points and the activities that need to continue alongside the track.
A perimeter route can keep the middle of a field available for games. Smaller sites may suit a compact circuit or connected path. Width and passing space should reflect group sizes and the pupils who will use it.
The turf is only one part of the installation. We assess existing levels, ground conditions and where water can drain before specifying excavation, a supporting base or an overlay onto a suitable existing surface.
A porous grass surface cannot correct a failing or waterlogged base by itself. The quote sets out the preparation, edges, joins and drainage work needed for your route, with school access and installation dates agreed in advance.
For routes near play equipment, discuss any separate impact-attenuating surfacing requirements as part of the specification.
Use contrasting colours, direction arrows, start and finish points or distance markers to make the route easy to follow. School colours and simple activity graphics can be incorporated into the agreed turf layout.
Keep the running route clear and choose any extra markings around how staff will use the space. A roadway role-play area is a different project; our dedicated roadway service covers roads, crossings and junctions.
The Daily Mile is an activity initiative built around 15 minutes of movement. Pupils can run, walk or wheel, and a circuit can be much shorter than one mile because it is used for repeated laps.
A new track is optional. A school may already have a suitable route. A dedicated artificial grass installation can be useful where you want to improve worn ground, define a route or make better use of a field perimeter.
The activity is additional to normal PE provision. For participation guidance, visit The Daily Mile Foundation’s FAQs. For a wider grounds project, explore our school and nursery surfacing services.
A few details help us propose a track that fits the school’s daily routine.
Tell us how many pupils will use the route together and how they will join, pass and leave it. Width, corners and supervision points need to work together.
Include wheelchair access, thresholds, gates, deliveries and the games or lessons that still need to use the surrounding space.
Share photos of the existing surface and any wet or worn areas. Discuss drainage, edge details and the care your team can provide throughout the year.
Use these guide prices for early planning. A track is quoted from its length and width, the existing ground, access and the agreed installation specification. A price per linear metre cannot be compared with a price per square metre without knowing the width.
| Option | Size / basis | Scope to confirm | Guide price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supply-only track sections | 4 × 12 m sections or an agreed layout | Turf, inlaid lines, included fitting materials and delivery. Confirm the width used for the linear-metre price. | £45–£75 per linear metre; confirm specification and width |
| Installation example | Up to 100m² | Base preparation, track fitting and edging; site conditions and drainage affect the final scope. | £3,000–£7,000, depending on layout and ground conditions |
| Underlay, where specified | Per m² of underlay | Product and thickness matched to the intended system. Any fall-protection requirement needs appropriate supporting test information. | £18–£38 per m²; confirm the required system |
| Bespoke layout or markings | Agreed design | Curves, school colours, logos, distance markers or activity graphics. | Quoted to specification |
Your written quote should confirm excavation and disposal, the base and drainage work, turf and markings, edging, delivery and installation responsibilities. Confirm the VAT-inclusive total, exclusions and proposed dates before ordering.

TRACK DETAILS FROM FULWOOD & MOSS SIDE
See how the finished 380-metre route follows the field perimeter, leaving the middle available for other school activities.
Start with advice, ask for supply-only materials or arrange the complete installation.
Share photos, approximate dimensions and your priorities. We discuss the route, assess the site and set out the proposed specification and cost.
For schools with a suitable contractor or installation team. We agree the dimensions, markings, materials and delivery, with responsibility for groundwork and fitting made clear.
For a complete project from preparation to finished turf. We agree access, the school programme, handover information and when the route can be brought into use.
MORE ABOUT OUR SCHOOL TRACK PROJECTS
Based in the North West, we work with schools, nurseries and community sites across the UK. Share your postcode, approximate route dimensions and preferred dates so we can discuss the survey and installation arrangements.
Planning more than a running route? Our schools and nurseries page brings together playgrounds, roadway play tracks and other outdoor surfacing options.
No. The activity is based on time, and pupils can use repeated laps of a shorter route. We plan the circuit around the school grounds and can discuss distance markers if they help staff run activities. The Daily Mile Foundation explains how smaller spaces can be used.
No. A dedicated installation is optional. Schools may already have a suitable route; new surfacing can help where the existing area is worn, muddy or difficult to use regularly. Start by assessing what you have and what needs improving.
There is no single width that suits every site. Group size, passing space, pupils’ access requirements, bends and the surrounding activities all matter. We agree the dimensions during the survey and design stage rather than fitting every school to one layout.
Yes, subject to a site assessment. A perimeter route can retain the central field for other activities, as shown in the Fulwood project. Ground conditions, drainage, roots, levels and access determine the work required.
Sometimes. The existing surface must be suitable for the proposed system, with appropriate levels, condition and drainage. We check whether an overlay is practical or whether removal and further preparation are needed.
The build-up depends on its intended use and location. A running route is not automatically a play-equipment fall zone. If the project includes such a zone, any required impact-attenuating system must be specified and supported by relevant test information for the equipment and installation. Explore shock pads and safety surfacing.
The guide above includes installation examples of £3,000–£7,000 for areas up to 100m², depending on the layout and ground conditions. Longer routes and more complex groundwork are quoted individually. Send the route length, width, postcode and photos so we can give you a useful estimate.
Do not assume so. In England, the premium cannot fund expenditure meeting the Department for Education’s definition of capital expenditure, which specifically lists active mile tracks among its examples. Your budget holder should check the current funding guidance and any other scheme’s eligibility before committing to work. We can provide a project quote for your planning.
We can discuss supply-only track sections and markings as well as full installation. Confirm dimensions, the layout, included materials, delivery and responsibility for the base, drainage and fitting before ordering.
We can discuss holiday dates and other suitable windows, subject to availability and the work required. Access, safeguarding requirements, deliveries and separating the work area from pupils are agreed before installation.
Clear leaves and debris, brush and clean as recommended for the selected turf, and check joins, edges and drainage. Heavy use or recurring moss, damage or standing water may require professional attention. Staff should also check conditions before sessions. We also provide professional cleaning and repairs.
The installation is designed for outdoor use, but conditions still affect access. Frost, ice, contamination, standing water or hot surfaces may make a session unsuitable. Follow the product care guidance and the school’s normal checks rather than assuming unrestricted use in all weather.
Wear depends on the chosen turf, traffic levels, installation and maintenance. Confirm the product and workmanship guarantee terms in your quote, including their conditions and exclusions. Routine checks and prompt attention to damaged edges or joins help keep the route in service.
Tell us the school name, postcode, approximate route length and width, and whether the existing surface is grass, tarmac or something else. Include the pupil groups who will use it and your preferred installation dates.
If you have photos, a rough plan or a budget in mind, share those with your enquiry. Photos can be emailed to sales@asgoodasgrass.co.uk. Let us know whether you want supply only or full installation.
