SHOCK PADS & SAFETY UNDERLAY SYSTEMS

Shock pads are a critical part of a high-performance sports pitch – improving safety, impact absorption and long-term consistency across football, rugby and multi-sport MUGAs.

Installed beneath the turf surface, these engineered layers help artificial pitches meet FIFA and World Rugby performance standards, ensuring safer landings, better energy return and reliable play throughout the pitch’s lifespan.

✔ Enhanced player safety: Absorbs impacts during tackles, falls and high-intensity play.

✔ Consistent ball behaviour: Maintains predictable bounce and traction across the full pitch.

✔ Longer surface lifespan: Reduces wear on turf fibres by distributing force evenly.

✔ Required for many IRB-compliant rugby systems: Meets safety and impact standards for contact sports.

Whether you’re upgrading an existing pitch or building new facilities, we’ll recommend the right shock-pad system for your sport, usage level and compliance requirements.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 3G & 4G PITCHES?

3G pitches use sand and rubber infill to replicate natural grass performance. They’re
FIFA, FA and World Rugby approved, offer excellent traction, and remain the
officially recognised standard for competitive football and rugby in the UK.

4G pitches are promoted as non-infill alternatives — but there is
no governing-body certification for 4G systems, and most “4G” products are effectively upgraded 3G variations.
While maintenance is lower, 4G is generally used for training, MUGAs and recreational play rather than league fixtures.

Not sure which system suits your pitch? We’ll advise based on sport, usage level, safety requirements and certification rules.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Got questions about surfaces, safety, or costs? Here’s what clubs, schools, and councils typically ask before installing an artificial sports pitch.

We install 3G and 4G football and rugby pitches, non-infill hockey surfaces, tennis and padel courts, MUGA pitches for schools and leisure centres, and specialist turf systems for golf, cricket, and training grounds. All systems meet safety and performance standards for professional and recreational play.

3G uses sand and rubber infill to replicate natural grass. It’s FIFA/FA approved and remains the certified standard for competitive football and rugby.

4G is marketed as non-infill, but currently has no official certification. It offers lower maintenance but isn’t universally accepted for match play.

We’ll advise which option suits your sport, budget, and compliance needs.

Our go-to systems are Viano-C 38mm and Victory-C 32mm — elite monofilament fibres designed for durability, safety, and consistent ball behaviour. Both meet FIFA Quality and FA performance criteria.

Maintenance is minimal but important. Regular brushing keeps fibres upright, while occasional professional deep cleaning removes debris and restores surface performance. Our maintenance plans include specialised grooming, cleaning, and repairs to extend your pitch’s lifespan.

Most pitches last 10–15 years, depending on usage and maintenance. Shock pads typically last even longer and can remain in place for resurfacing cycles.

Compared to natural grass, artificial pitches require far less maintenance. However, for maximum lifespan and safety, regular brushing, debris removal, and infill redistribution are recommended. We also offer deep cleaning and resurfacing services to keep your pitch in peak condition.

The cost of an artificial sports pitch varies based on size, surface type, and site preparation. Here are typical price ranges:

  • 5-a-Side Football Pitch: £30,000 – £50,000
  • Full-Size Football Pitch: £100,000 – £150,000
  • Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA): £50,000 – £80,000

If your school, club, or sports facility is outside these areas, get in touch—we offer custom solutions for projects nationwide.

If you’re installing a 5-a-side garden football pitch, prices start from £30,000-£50,000, depending on turf type, installation needs, and site prep.

Yes! Many professional football, rugby, and hockey teams use FIFA, FA, and IRB-approved artificial pitches for training and competitive matches. Our surfaces meet international performance and safety standards, ensuring a reliable playing experience.

In most cases, yes – especially for full-size football and rugby pitches. Planning permission is required for changes of land use, floodlighting, fencing, and drainage systems. We can advise on the process and provide documentation to support your application.

Prices typically start from £22–£25 per sqm depending on turf type, shock pads, and site preparation. For a full-size football pitch, this usually equates to £100k–£150k installed.

A full-size 4G pitch usually costs between £110k–£170k, depending on groundworks, drainage, and whether shock pads are required. For smaller 5-a-side pitches, costs can start from £30k–£50k.

Both typically last 10–15 years with proper maintenance. The key difference is in the infill – 3G requires regular topping up and redistribution, while 4G markets itself as “non-infill” but currently lacks long-term independent data.

Yes. We provide resurfacing and repair services for existing sports facilities. This includes deep cleaning, replacing worn turf, adding new shock pads, and upgrading to modern 3G/4G standards without rebuilding the entire base.

Absolutely. Rugby pitches require extra safety measures, which is why we install IRB-certified shock pads to absorb impact in scrums and tackles. These ensure compliance with player-safety standards.

Yes – schools and clubs can often access Sport England, Football Foundation, and RFU/FA funding. We can provide CFH reports, specifications, and quotes to support grant applications.

Yes — we regularly install Daily Mile Tracks alongside school and community sports facilities. These all-weather tracks provide a safe, cushioned surface that complements football, rugby, and MUGA areas perfectly.

They can be fitted around existing pitches or along the perimeter of a field, using the same high-performance artificial grass and optional shock-pad safety systems for added comfort and compliance with Critical Fall Height standards.

Yes – alongside traditional sports pitches, we also install specialist artificial turf for mini golf and crazy golf courses.

These surfaces are designed to deliver consistent ball roll, tight control and long-term durability, making them ideal for indoor venues, outdoor leisure attractions, schools and commercial entertainment spaces.

Mini golf installations typically use short-pile, low-friction turf with precision joins and carefully prepared bases to ensure smooth play and a professional finish.

If you’re planning a dedicated mini golf project, you can learn more about our approach, surface options and pricing on our Mini Golf Turf Installation page.
