At As Good As Grass, we designed and installed a roadway-style artificial grass learning track at Rosa Street Primary School in Durham. The project transformed a steep, patchy grass area into a safe, engaging outdoor space used for play, movement, and road safety education.
The school required an interactive outdoor surface suitable for Early Years and KS1 pupils, similar to the roadway play track installations we deliver for schools. The original plan covered approximately 85sqm, but during the project the school requested an additional extension near the sand pit, increasing the total installed area to around 120sqm.
The existing area suffered from uneven, patchy grass and a significant slope, making it unsuitable for structured play or learning activities. Drainage and stability were also concerns due to the gradient.
We carried out a full excavation and sub-base installation, using MOT Type 1 and sand to stabilise and soften the slope before laying turf. The surface was finished using 32mm Playcare Extreme artificial grass, chosen for its durability and suitability for school environments and widely used across our school and nursery installations.
The track was completed with custom road-style markings, including junctions, crossings, parking bays, traffic lights, and STOP signage — creating a realistic, child-friendly learning layout.
