At As Good As Grass, we installed this artificial grass football pitch at Wilmslow Preparatory School’s sports hall in 2018.
Now, in August 2025, the surface remains in excellent condition – despite being booked almost every evening for public football matches, school PE lessons, competitive fixtures and after-school training.
The school required a durable, safe, and realistic football surface that could withstand constant use while maintaining performance and appearance. The pitch sits alongside the sports hall and is used daily by pupils and the wider community.
To achieve long-term stability and drainage, we completed a full ground build-up before installing the artificial grass system.

The original surface was removed, with approximately 100mm of soil excavated to prepare a stable foundation.
We installed:
• 85–90mm MOT sub-base for strength and drainage
• 10–15mm Grano dust layer for precision levelling
• High-quality artificial grass with kiln-dried sand brushed into the fibres
The kiln-dried sand infill helps protect the fibres, support heavy usage, and maintain a natural ball roll – essential for a football-focused facility.
Seven years on, the pitch has experienced consistent high traffic with no structural issues and no performance concerns. In fact, it has only recently had its first professional deep clean.
During our latest visit, we carried out a full deep clean and provided guidance on ongoing care to ensure the surface continues performing at a high level for years to come.
The school has reported not a single issue since installation – a testament to proper groundwork and quality materials.
What was once an underused outdoor area is now a high-quality football pitch that supports:
