At As Good As Grass, we carried out a surface-only artificial grass installation at a Primary School in Fulwood, transforming an existing tarmac base into a safe, high-quality football pitch designed for everyday school sport.
The previous surface was hard, slippery when wet, and frequently caused injuries when children fell – particularly to hands, knees, and in one case, a head impact. The school needed a greener, safer solution that would soften falls while still delivering a professional-looking sports surface.
This was a surface-only installation, completed onto an existing tarmac base that remained structurally sound. We installed a durable artificial grass system designed specifically for school sports use, incorporating the school’s branded pitch line colours for a clean, professional football layout.
While the area remains suitable for netball and basketball, the school opted for dedicated football markings — reflecting football as their preferred and most frequently played sport.

The original tarmac base created two major problems:
Firstly, it became extremely slippery in wet conditions. Secondly, any fall resulted in painful contact with a hard surface – leading to regular minor injuries and growing safety concerns.
The school wanted to retain the space for sport but eliminate the harsh, unforgiving nature of the existing surface.
We installed a specialist artificial grass surface for schools designed to soften impact, improve grip in wet weather, and provide a far more forgiving surface for active children.
By working with the existing base, we delivered a cost-effective upgrade that dramatically improved safety without requiring a full excavation or pitch rebuild.
The result is a vibrant football pitch that looks and feels like real grass – but performs reliably all year round.
The transformation has been immediate. The pitch is now used daily for PE lessons, school sports events, and after-school activities – with far fewer fall-related injuries and a noticeable boost in pupil confidence.
We also carry out twice-yearly maintenance visits to keep the surface performing at its best, ensuring longevity and consistent play quality.
