PLAYGROUND ARTIFICIAL GRASS, PLANNED AROUND THE PLAY

As Good As Grass supplies and installs artificial grass for playgrounds and play areas, from school climbing zones to themed visitor attractions. We assess the existing ground, drainage, equipment and how children will use the space before agreeing the surfacing system.

For areas around play equipment, the turf is only one part of the specification. The base, any impact-attenuating layers and the required impact area need to be considered together. For open play space, we focus on the surface, access, drainage and upkeep that suit the intended activities.

We improved the levels of the existing base with additional aggregate, then fitted 36mm Play Care grass around the new climbing equipment. The project shows why preparation and careful edge work matter.

Service from survey to installation was second to none and words cannot describe how pleased we are with the final result. Full marks to Reese and the lads for a high quality installation and for being punctual, polite and for tyding up afterwards. Would have no hesitation in recommending the company, 100%. Thank you

Ian came to the house to do a quick survey and discuss the project. We agreed on a price quicky and easily. His team were here for one full day then a few hours the next day for a 4mx5m area of grass, some groundwork and moving some flags to form a shed base (which was all including in the very acceptable price!). Very impressed with their work ethic and efficiency. Did a neat, professional job and cleaned up after themselves, even putting my gardening tools back in the shed after moving it. Would highly recommend for anyone.

Ian and the team were fantastic. Gave me a competitive quote and advice on a waterlogged area where we wanted Artificial grass and a soak away was also put in. Quote to implementation within 3 weeks which was impressive in a busy period of time. Would recommend to anyone looking to install fake/artificial grass.

From the initial enquiry to the finished product, rest assured this is a professional company. Ian and his team got on with the job, were neat and tidy throughout the whole process of relaying our old lawn with artificial grass. We were kept informed at every stage. All were polite and friendly, all at a very reasonable cost. I would not have any hesitation in recommending "As Good As Grass" .

I've had my artificial grass since 2007 and it was looking rather sad full of moss and weeds. I booked the cleaning service and was amazed at the result, my lawn looks like new. Reiss and Ethan did a fantastic job they worked very hard. It was unbelievable to see the amount of stuff that came out of the grass, it looks fantastic. I would recommend this service and the two lads 100%.

PLAN SURFACING AROUND YOUR PLAY EQUIPMENT

Share the equipment layout and manufacturer’s information before choosing the surface. Where impact protection is needed, the tested surfacing system must suit the equipment’s free height of fall and cover the required impact area.

A grass product or a shock pad thickness on its own does not establish the performance of the finished installation. Ask for test information covering the proposed combination of turf, underlay and supporting construction.

We discuss these requirements during the survey. Our shock pad and safety flooring page explains the options, while RoSPA’s play surfacing advice explains the importance of test information and correct installation.

PREPARE THE BASE, DRAINAGE & EDGES

A tidy-looking top surface cannot correct movement or drainage problems underneath. We assess levels, the existing base, water flow and connections to paths before recommending preparation work.

At Norden Primary School, we improved the existing base levels before fitting the grass. Other sites may need excavation, replacement material or a different drainage arrangement.

  • Check low spots and damaged areas before covering them
  • Plan secure edges and joins around equipment
  • Agree transitions to paths and neighbouring surfaces
We Installed Peter Rabbit Adventure Playground

FIT THE SURFACE INTO YOUR PLAYGROUND DESIGN

Plan the turf around how people enter, move through and use the space. Routes between gates, play equipment and seating need as much thought as the main activity area. Include mobility requirements and the people who use the site in that discussion.

Natural-looking turf can sit alongside coloured artificial grass for themed details or defined play zones. Surface firmness, gradients, widths and transitions should be assessed for the intended users, rather than assuming that grass alone makes an area accessible.

For a broader education-site project, our schools and nurseries page brings the different surfacing services together.

KEEP THE PLAY AREA IN GOOD CONDITION

Artificial grass removes the mowing, but it still needs regular attention. Clear leaves and debris, follow the specified cleaning and brushing routine, and check joins, edges and busy landing or access points for wear.

Keep drainage routes clear and assess conditions before use, particularly during frost, ice or after heavy rain. Surface care sits alongside the operator’s equipment inspection and maintenance programme.

We can help with professional cleaning and repairs when an existing play surface needs attention.

HOW A PLAYGROUND TURF SYSTEM FITS TOGETHER

The proposed layers and fitting details should be described together in the specification. This makes quotes easier to compare and responsibilities clearer.

Part of the system What it does What to agree
Base and drainage Supports the surface and manages water through the proposed construction. Existing ground condition, levels, drainage routes and any preparation or repair work.
Impact-attenuating layer, where specified Works with the other layers to provide the required impact performance. The exact tested system and its suitability for the equipment and impact area.
Artificial grass Provides the finished play surface and appearance. The product, intended use, fitting method and care requirements.
Joins, edges and transitions Connects the turf to the surrounding play space. Secure fixing and details around paths, gates, equipment and neighbouring surfaces.

PLAYGROUND ARTIFICIAL GRASS FAQS

It can be, when the complete surface is specified for the site, equipment and intended use. We assess the base, drainage, fitting details and any impact-protection requirements before proposing the system. Regular inspection, maintenance and appropriate supervision remain part of managing the play area.

Start with the activities, expected wear, appearance and care requirements. At Norden Primary School we fitted 36mm Play Care grass around climbing equipment after improving the base levels. That project specification is not a universal recommendation: browse the playground turf range and discuss the full system with us.

The required impact performance determines the specification. Some projects use an underlay as part of a tested system; a particular pad thickness alone does not prove suitability. Provide the equipment details and discuss the proposed turf, underlay and base together. See our shock pad and safety flooring guidance.

BS EN 1176 addresses playground equipment and surfacing requirements. BS EN 1177 covers testing for impact attenuation; BSI lists BS EN 1177:2018+A1:2023 as the current edition. Ask for supporting information for the exact proposed system and agree the inspection or testing requirements for your project. A general claim that a turf product is “safe” does not establish the suitability of the installed play area.

Potentially, if the existing surface and proposed construction are suitable. We assess stability, levels, drainage and the required impact performance before recommending what can stay and what needs changing. Covering cracks, movement or low spots with turf will not solve the underlying problem.

The general guide is £45–£85 per m², with examples above starting at £4,500 for 100m². The final price depends on the site and full specification. Confirm whether preparation, drainage, underlay, edging, removal, fitting and any testing arrangements are included, along with the VAT-inclusive total.

Drainage depends on the whole construction and the conditions below and around it. We assess existing problems and agree the necessary work; replacing the top surface alone does not guarantee that waterlogging will disappear. Keep drainage routes clear as part of ongoing maintenance.

Lifespan depends on the selected product, use, installation and care. Remove debris, follow the cleaning and brushing guidance, and inspect joins, edges and busy areas for damage. Confirm the product and workmanship guarantee terms in your quote. We also offer cleaning and repair services.

We confirm the programme after reviewing the area, preparation, access and fitting detail. Tell us about school holidays, venue opening hours or other contractors so we can plan the work and separation from users. Include any specified inspection or testing in the programme before reopening.

We can discuss coloured turf and defined activity zones as part of the layout. Share your ideas and the intended activities so we can consider the markings, surface and surrounding space together. Dedicated road-style layouts are covered by our roadway play track service.
